Dr. Wayne Walters, Senior Pastor

Wayne has been a United Methodist pastor for thirty years and has served churches in La Cañada, Glendale, Sierra Madre, and now Burbank for twenty-two of those years.

Wayne has an extensive education. He earned a BA from San Diego State University and a MDiv from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He also received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. Wayne is currently a PhD Candidate in Leadership and Change at Antioch University and hopes to finish his dissertation and graduate in June 2011. He has served for seven years as Ecclesiastical Assistant Professor of United Methodist Ministries at Fuller Theological Seminary where he teaches a course every two years on United Methodist Polity and counsels United Methodist students in ordination requirements and vocational development.

Wayne and his wife, Chris, were married in 1998. Chris works at NBC Universal on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance auditing and is an elected member of the Board of Education of Glendale Unified School District where she serves as Board Clerk. Wayne and Chris have four children -- Brenna, 29; Christopher, 23; Eric, 18; and Joshua, 15. They have a six-year old black labrador retriever named Fable. Fable was born and raised as a guide dog for the blind and was "career-changed" shortly after she turned one. Wayne often brings her to the church office with him during the week.

Wayne loves to preach and teach in a manner that empowers people to think and wrestle with issues for themselves and to provide the tools to make educated decisions and choices. He is especially passionate about leading people into a deeper and richer understanding and practice of Christian discipleship. He enjoys traditional worship expressions as well as historic and more diverse methods of meditation, prayer, and worship. When he is not reading or writing papers for his PhD program, Wayne enjoys various outdoor activities and exercising including hiking, biking, weight lifting, and yoga. He is committed to taking at least 7,000 steps a day and serves as a Champion for Virgin HealthMiles for United Methodists in Southern California. Champions promote the benefit of regular exercise, particularly walking, as a way of improving general health and fitness.

Wayne's day off is Monday. He is available for short-term counseling or spiritual direction by appointment.
